On 9 July 2003, a prototype of the new Air Force Utility Uniform was unveiled at Andrews Air Force Base (AFB), Maryland, and Bolling AFB, Wear-testing of the new uniforms began in January 2004.
The prototype Air Force Utility Uniform featured the green, grey and blue tiger-stripe camouflage pattern, which is shown here. This pattern was dropped in May 2005, in favour of the a more subdued camouflage pattern.
In spite of its clear relationship to U.S. Tiger Stripe camouflage, which was used during the Vietnam War, the prototype Air Force Utility Uniform is intended to be a working uniform, not a tactical uniform. When airmen are working in tactical environments, they will still be outfitted with the appropriate tactical uniforms.
