Uncover your potential', indeed! Once you stop ogling the girl, though, you might notice that this Australian Special Air Service (SAS) recruiting poster shows Australian Disruptive Pattern Camouflage to very good effect. [Image courtesy Brad Turner collection.]
Type II leaf pattern (obverse)
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
Most often called 'Type II leaf pattern', this distinctive Soviet two-colour camouflage is significantly less detailed than the 1941 summer camouflage pattern. Although it is sometimes described as a pattern of green leaves on a tan background, printing errors make clear the fact that the tan-coloured elements are actually printed onto a medium green base.
Very little is known about the distribution of the one-piece camouflage uniform on which this camouflage pattern appeared — a circumstance which has led author Dennis Desmond to speculate that it was either a limited issue camouflage garment or, possibly, a trial uniform which was not put into production (see Camouflage uniforms of the Soviet Union and Russia, 1937 to the present, p. 87). However, it is almost certain that the Type II leaf pattern represents the first stage in the evolution of the 1968 'sun bunnies' (Russian: солнечные зайчики, trans. solnechnyye zaychiki) camouflage pattern.
