The M/05 family of camouflage patterns was developed by the Information Technology Institute of the Finnish State Technical Research Centre, which utilised various photographs of Finnish forests that had been taken by the Finnish Forest Research Institute. Several analytical methods were employed, in an effort to create camouflage patterns that best represented Finnish terrain.
The four-colour M/05 woodland camouflage pattern comprises aliased dark green, spring green and charcoal grey elements on a wood-brown background. It is considered by many to be far more effective than the earlier M/62 and M/91 camouflage patterns.
