Republic of Bulgaria

The Republic of Bulgaria is a state in south eastern Europe. It borders on five other countries: Romania to the north (mostly along the River Danube), Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south. The Black Sea defines the extent of the country to the east.

Bulgaria has been a member of the European Union since 2007 and of NATO since 2004. An effort to modernise Bulgaria's armed forces, "PLAN 2004", aims to better meet the perceived military needs of NATO and the European Union.
