The French Republic is bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Andorra, and Spain. Due to its overseas departments, France also shares land borders with Brazil and Suriname (bordering French Guiana), and the Netherlands Antilles (bordering Saint-Martin). France is also linked to the United Kingdom by the Channel Tunnel, which passes underneath the English Channel.

The Military of France has a very long history and has been very influential in World history. It comprises an army, a navy, an air force and a military police force. Some of its primary objectives are: the defence of national territory; the protection of French interests abroad; and the maintenance of global stability.
